From Frank Carleton:
Views of the authentic 2014 annual Pere Receveur Commemoration, an event which has occurred every year since 1988 when was commemorated on 14th February the bicentenary of Pere Receveur’s death with the Latin Office of the Dead chanted by a Gregorian schola. In 2014 it was Mass in the ancient traditional rite of the Catholic Church celebrated by Father Sayed Elias of the Society of St. Pius X who also preached the occasional sermon. Fundamentally this annual event commemorates the inception of the Mass in Australia by the two priests of the Laperouse Expedition, Pere Laurent Receveur and the Abbe Jean Andre Mongez. Because an ordonnance of 1765 obliged chaplains in the old French royal navy to say Mass on Sundays and Holy Days except the weather prevented and given the number of Sundays (9) and Holy days (26) according to an eighteenth century Roman Calendar of 1781 between 26th January and 10th March, 1788 it seems from simple calculation that both priests of the Laperouse Expedition said up to 40 Masses including the Requiem presumed to have been said for Pere Receveur, who died on Sunday, February 17th, by his surviving confrere, the Abbe Mongez.

Site du musée Lapérouse

The painting of La Perouse is by Marie Détrée, Official Painter of the the French Navy, who recently carried out a mission to Sydney during the International Fleet Review. A book on this mission, to be titled A Mission in the Pacific, is in preparation. The book will pay homage to the La Perouse site where there was a fine ceremony with the crew of the Vendémiaire on the 7th October. In addition a calendar will be produced and sold for the benefit of French benevolent societies in Australia.

Legacy

WEB Matt and Laperouse 2Kingsford Smith representative, Matt Thistlethwaite speaking about the Laperouse Museum in the House of Representatives 21 November, 2013

On 17 November, I had the great honour of attending the Friends of Laperouse Museum annual general meeting with my fellow patrons, the Consul General of France, Eric Berti and Don Harwin MLC of the New South Wales Parliament.

The Laperouse Museum is in my electorate and provides patrons with an absorbing history lesson in the relationship between Australian and French people. This began in 1788 with the first visit of La Perouse to that area, which has been named in his honour. There is also a monument to Father Receveur, who was the first European and Catholic to be buried in Australian soil.

A number of events hosted by the Laperouse Museum over 12 months were highlighted at the annual general meeting. They included the visit of Stephane Romatet on 29 February earlier this year; the Father Receveur mass on 17 February; La Perouse Day; the Heritage Festival Walk; a visit by the Secretary of the La Perouse Association, Bernard Jimenez; Bastille Day; the History Week lecture, which was delivered this year by Professor Richard White; and a visit by the Vendemiaire, a French naval ship that was here during the military review.

I encourage everyone to visit the Laperouse Museum. I thank in particular the Friends of the Laperouse Museum, who are volunteers, for their great work. And I thank in particular William Land and Tony Gentile.

French Navy, Legacy

WEB Sailors and commandant 3The French Consul-General, Eric Berti, with support from the Friends hosted Capitaine de frégate Jean-René Degans and crew members from le Vendémiaire on their visit to La Perouse today. Le Vendémiaire is in Sydney as part of the International Fleet Review celebrations in Sydney. Among the guests were the Member for Kingsford Smith, Matt Thistlethwaite, the Deputy Mayor of Randwick, Anthony Andrews and his wife Samia, and former NSW Minister for Arts (1988-1995) Peter Collins. Commander Degans presented Vendémiaire plaques to the Friends and to Randwick City council. Slyvie Humphries sang La Marseillaise, Advance Australia Fair, and as well as Eternal Father, Strong to Save (a hymn for sailors) and La Brigade Française, 1er Régiment d’Artillerie de la Marine, and 21th Régiment de Ligne - Brigade Irlandaise provided the musket and cannon salute (see video below). The Official Painter of the French Navy (Peintre de la Marine), Mme Marie Détrée took photographs which she will turn into paintings. Courtesy of the Military College Duntroon, three young Saint-Cyriens, in full dress uniform, also participated in the official ceremony. This is the first time that officer cadets from Saint-Cyr have been at the Museum (photo above: Capitaine de frégate Jean-René Degans and two Saint-Cyriens in Museum).
