Ivan Barko

Emeritus Professor Ivan Barko Commander in the Order of Academic Palms (France) Centenary of Federation Medal FAHA.  He was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities in 1976.

Ivan Barko was born in Hungary and settled in Australia in 1956. He lectured at the University College, Newcastle, became Reader at the University of Melbourne in 1967, and in the same year Professor of French at Monash University.From 1975 until 1991 he was McCaughey Professor of of French at the University of Sydney. In 1993 he was appointed Visiting Professor and Foundation Head of the School of Languages at the University of Melbourne.  He is Emeritus Professor of French at the University of Sydney.
