Eucalyptus - In 1777 during Cook’s third expedition David Nelson collected a twig of what Banks had earlier seen in Botany Bay and had noted as the ‘Dragon’s Blood Tree’. The specimen reached England and was kept in Banks’ herbarium at Kew until Chales-Louis L’Héritier de Brutelle on a visit examined it. He published his description as Eucalyptus obliqua in 1788. Eu from the Greek for ‘well’ and kalyptos for ‘covered’, in reference to the cap covering the bud. Obliqua came from the asymmetrical leaf.
